How to Get an Apostille for a VA Birth Certificate
Apostille is French for certification. An Apostille is a required seal on legal documents that will be used internationally in a country that is a member of the Hague Convention. Documents that have been notarized can receive an Apostille seal as well as birth certificates and other vital records signed by the Virginia State Registrar. A birth certificate may have an Apostille affixed by the authentication office.
Review the birth certificate to verify it has been issued within the last 12 months and is an original document from the Virginia Department of Vital Records.
2
Write a cover letter to submit with the birth certificate. The cover letter must contain the following information: Date, your name, address, city, state, zip, phone number, destination country or embassy where the birth certificate will be sent and the number of documents.
3
Write a check or money order for $10 for the first document and $5 for each additional document. Make the check out to Secretary of the Commonwealth. Do not send cash through the mail.
