AZ gov picks prominent lawyer for immigration case

A prominent Washington lawyer will argue Arizona's U.S. Supreme Court appeal of lower court rulings blocking implementation of provisions of an illegal immigration law.

Gov. Jan Brewer on Monday announced her selection of Paul Clement as lead counsel in the Supreme Court case on the law known as SB1070.

Clement served as the federal government's top appellate lawyer from 2005 to 2008 during George W. Bush's presidency. He is now in private practice.

It's common for top appellate lawyers with significant experience in practicing before the U.S. Supreme Court to argue high court cases previously handled by other lawyers.

The state must file its appeal by July 11. The Supreme Court likely will announce in the fall whether it will consider the appeal.
